One Letter of Tears

2008 | Mixed Media

An installation work based on the Japanese drama 'One Litre of Tears'. The piece is a replica of a love letter from Aya, a young girl dying from a slowly dishabilitating disease, to Asou-kun, her awkward but loyal boyfriend. The viewer is asked to carefully exmaine the letter along with a video to take in the tragic message.

In the note Aya explains that she cannot be with him because it pains her heart to know that they have no future. Also inside the envelope is a cellphone strap of a dolphin that the couple had bought together as a symbol of their feelings for each other.

This is part of a series of work that will examine the use of various media as a means for emotional communication within Japanese story telling culture.

Just below is the video that accompanied the installation.
